Fresh for The Bloom Blog, South America City takes a look at what’s happening in Buenos Aires and in Argentine music in general. We’ll peep neighbors here and there as well, looking into Brazil and Chile’s windows, eavesdropping on Colombia and Peru when possible, but more than not, you’ll get a glance at the particular version of the Andes that is urban BA, whose consumer culture was until recently dominated by indie rock. Where cumbia, hip hop, and reggaeton now have a firm foothold and where you can listen to some of the hottest of those genres, with the occasional rocker sneaking into the mix for good form.
First featured artist is (….drum roll and boom clap) El Hijo de la Cumbia. El Hijo has been producing hot tracks for a fiery minute from his home in San Martin, in BA’s urban “inland empire,” less suburb than concrete sprawl. Independently, he has managed to bring his beats to Mexico and Europe on the strength of talent and grit. El Hijo on Myspace
This week El Hijo de la Cumbia is on tour in Mexico bringing beat-driven cumbia compositions to North America.
Back in Buenos Aires, spring is hitting with warm-weather fronts and summer plans popping off. A new English radio show and internet TV station showcase city happenings while weekly parties like Zizek and Fugees and seasonal festivals prep for crowds emerging from winter hibernation.
