HIGHER GROUND- D.C based Wayna is heating up!

Friday, October 10th, 2008

If you haven’t heard Wayna’s name by now-  you soon will.   She’s a refreshing artist-  writes, sings and is  dynamic on stage.    Not to mention she’s got the looks too– Wayna is gorgeous!

Her roots are Ethiopian and she resides in D.C.

I first met her after hearing her name for a while at the Nu-Soul Series at Frank’s Lounge back in June.  I loved her performance and we really vibed.   Next thing I found myself hooking her up with Les Nubians at Highline Ballroom which was a great show.

Now Wayna just embarked on a big tour of FYE retail stores which kicked off October 8th and goes through E.Coast region mid-November.

We’ve also got a free download on Soultracks of  ‘My Love’  -  Download it now as it’s a good cause for awareness -in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This note from Wayna–October is the month we pause to remember the countless women in our country who are survivors of domestic violence.  If you’ve been to a show recently, you know that this cause is close to my heart and the subject of one of the songs on my new album, Higher Ground. This month, I’m offering it as a free download on SOULTRACKS the best site for soul music, hands down.

Please share it with your friends and loved ones and help us raise awareness about this crisis in our community.

Really DIRTY!

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

UK’s DIRTY FUZZ is starting to make a buzz Stateside.   They will be in NY for one week during CMJ.  Oct 21-27th.      The lead singer Elida is known for her outrageous moves and energy and passion stirring vocals.  Depending on the day- her hair could be pink, bright orange, green- you name it– can’t wait to see what her get ups like…..

Those of you in the know-  know she’s been blogging for me- Ms. E….One of my contributors.  She doesn’t hold back- she always says what’s on her mind and sometimes it’s quite shocking but got to give it up for her candidness and attitude.  That’s why I love her and that’s why I’m super excited to meet her co-horts in the band– the other 3.    Dirty Fuzz.

In the meantime-  they have been working hard on their debut album  ‘Rocksploitation’ and the lovely folks at OURSTAGE have been really supporting them heavily- they love Dirty Fuzz and we’ve worked out something very special so you the fans-  all the fans world-wide can get a sneak preview of the entire album  on the Party Line on Tuesday, October 14th at 4PM EST.    Ourstage ‘Listening Party’-  The next big release.    We need your support.  Log on to OURSTAGE and sign up now!

They are also featured on the CMJ/Ourstage page -  a free download-  ‘The History of Rock N Roll’.

FREE DOWNLOAD

Dirty Fuzz is performing on the OURSTAGE CMJ Showcase on Thursday, October 23rd at Ace of Clubs. at 9 Great Jones St-  $10.00 for non-CMJ badgeholders.  9PM

The Brits are doing something huge for the first time at CMJ.  Normally they just take over SXSW so this is a big deal and one of the nights is called  ‘Bring on The Brits’ at Annex. 9PM   Dirty Fuzz are playing here too.  Wednesday, October 22nd.

I Kiffe NY, I Love French Hip Hop!

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

In a mission to boost awareness in U.S and NY in French Urban Culture- The French Embassy has sponsored and created a cultural initiative called I Kiffe NY.

This program launched this month and goes through CMJ kicking off with several events this week all around NYC including a poetry slam and music jam with Les Nubians. This is tomorrow at Joe’s Pub. 7PM.

The big night during CMJ features French Hip Hop hosted by DJ Spank at Hiro Ballroom. Friday, October 24th. 7PM. $20.00

Artists La Caution, Wax Tailor and Mangu will perform.

I love La Caution and very excited to see them perform. It’s their U.S Debut.

Wax Tailor has a U.S deal with DeCon Records. He will do a V.J and D.J set.

Mangu is unsigned. He combines Salsa/Latin sounds with Hip Hop and Electro flavor.

La Caution will also perform at 11:30PM late night at Joe’s Pub the night before- Thursday, October 23rd.

I am still vibing off the amazing Saian Supa Crew at SOB’s 3 years ago. I was the first to bring that crew to the U.S. People still talk about it so come on down- get some French Hip Hop in your blood.

SOUL MUSIC GOT LIFTED IN DETROIT

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
Highlights from the Friday night at Soultracks Readers’ Choice Awards and the After Party. I decided to spend the rest of weekend being a fabulous Auntie to my adorable 3 and 4 year old Olivia and Nathaniel.

So— This was the 2nd Annual Soultracks Awards and I must say it was a vast improvement and step up from last year. First off- a much more suited venue- Max Fisher Music Center- it provided a friendly and personal vibe, great acoustics and a more professional setting.

Secondly- the talent this year performance wise was outstanding.

I had 3 artists up for ‘Best New Artist’- Melissa Young, Heston and April Hill. Heston was also up for ‘Best Male Vocalist’.

A-Town took over D-Town that’s for sure….Even the host- Jodine from Jodine’s Corner contributed to the A - Talent! She was fire! She shared duties with broadcast legend and voice of Detroit Pistons- Mason! He was great….

So without further adieu!
The Highlights:

1) Heston’s performance of ‘Good Morning America’ - I had never seen him perform with a band- only acoustic. He wowed the audience. Was chilling.

2) Being picked up at airport sharing ride w. Dain Harris, David Nathan, and Mike Dawson.

3) Bonding with Chris Rob

4) Meeting Blues legends Bobby Rush and Otis Clay who were in town for the Blues and Boogie Woogie Festival

5) Maya Azucena’s dress

6) Seeing Jodine host the awards again- love her spirit!

7) Meeting Sy Smith for the first time. Her performance was spectacular. King Britt has been talking about her forever. So have many others so it was a true pleasure and honor.

8) Watching April Hill accept her award for ‘Best New Artist’- she was so shocked it was cute.

9) Seeing Phil Perry - he took it to another level- can’t touch him!

10) Seeing Richard Dunn(Muddy Waters) all dressed up!

11) Having Drake Phifer buy me a drink but forgetting to give it to me!

12) A sneak peak of new songs hot off the boards from Maya Azucena’s new album. Wow- that’s all I’m going to say. I think me,, Charles, Anita and Tom feel the same.

13) Monica Blaire’s ‘Get Up’- Her performance and incredible energy. Although she swears I have more energy than her– Not!

14) Having people come up to me all night saying ‘Thank You’ for all the good work and that I’m admired and that I’ve contributed so much to the Soul Movement. That’s really not just validation but made me feel that my hard work has not gone unnoticed.

15) PJ Morton coming up to me saying he’s heard a lot of great things about me.

16) Meeting Big Dose again after all these years– He still looks the same!

17) Finally meeting Frank Sheffield after phone and emails back and forth.

18) Cloud 9– Left Detroit and now in Atlanta- Always a pleasure.

19) Breakfast with Maya, Heston and Myles Anthony

20) Closing down the after party at Jazz Cafe- Me, Chris Rob, Maya and Charles White…Lights on, music stopped and we still weren’t ready and we still were dancing.

21) Liv Warfield’s magnificent performance!

DRED SCOTT TRIO w/ STRINGs

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Here’s another blog post from Dred Scott.

it’s been a busy week.  many gigs.  including a great one at the arlen,de. gild hall with richard.  i had to drive the boys down and was forced to listen to fleetwood mac for much of the way (bassist md’ing tribute nite and was boning up) but they don’t suck and it reminded me how hot i used to think stevie nicks was.  i wouldn’t have minded blowing some coke up HER ass.

played yesterday at atlantic antic, a very large street fair i would have otherwise not attended.  it was pretty fun and any gig i can ride my bike to is a good gig.

and of course, i put off writing the string arrangements till the last minute so i was busy with that most of the week.  not so hard, really, even though i’ve never actually written for this instrumentation - three fiddles and a viola.  did you know, by the way, that viola needs it’s own part and can’t read the violin parts?  seems strange to me.  something about a movable clef.  whatever.  that’s what the rehearsal’s for.  should be interesting.  hope you can make it.

I was so happy this morning when I found out one of my favorite artists who embodies everything soul and funky and cool– Raphael Saadiq

He’s returning to SOB’s after an overwhelmingly receptive audience and a SOLD OUT show this past Tuesday.

Saadiq shined- he was radiant - he was magnificent - so I heard.    I can’t tell you how happy I am because I so badly wanted to be at SOB’s on Tuesday but I was just too damn tired….So…..I get to go Monday– October 6th.   Can’t wait!

His latest project  ‘The Way I See It’ is being praised all around for being innovative, funky, pushing the envelope and being ultra creative.

I suggest you get your tickets now so that you’re not turned away on Monday at the door because that’s what happened Tuesday.

World Soul artist Heston tells his story…

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Atlanta soul artist Heston debuts with an intoxicating masterful project called ‘Storyteller’. Originally from Dominica - a small island in the W.Indies– Heston incorporates a lot of Caribbean flavor and other worldly sounds in his music. He’s especially influenced by Reggae. There’s a gorgeous reggae song - a duet with Yahzarah called ‘Feel Like Dancing’.

Heston’s on the way to Detroit as you read this- performing at the Soultracks after party- All-Star Jam.

He’s up for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Male Vocalist’.

He’s featured on Ebonyjet - an interview/podcast and on Uncensored Interview

Check out one of Heston’s featured tracks.
