I look forward to seeing her in Toronto next month for Canadian Music Week!
I went to this Uganda Break Dance Project screening of a film called ‘Bouncing Cats’ at NYU not long ago and I was introduced to this girl Genesis Be by my friend and esteemed colleague Martha Diaz of the Hip Hop Education Center/Hip Hop Association.
Genesis hosted the affair- I was immediately drawn to her charismatic personality and energy. We stayed in touch and I asked her to rock an Efficacy which got a great reaction from fans when we premiered it on ThisIsRealMusic - It’s now up on my Youtube channel- peep it here:

Genesis Be is not your average MC by any means- firstly- she’s deeply rooted in the south- Mississippi to be exact – it’s very much reflected in her rhymes and rhythmic arrangements. She moved here to NY to study at the Clive Davis School of Recorded Music..She’s also a self-starter/entrepreneur and has formed an organization called StriveTillIRise - What started out as T-shirts has now become a movement. You can read more here: Washington Square News.
I’m expecting big things from Genesis Be so stay tuned.. I’m trying to convince her to call the album ‘Mississippi to Manhattan’

This is a MUST ATTEND event- for many reasons!
It’s for a serious cause we all need to step up and raise more awareness and donate to. Breast Cancer.
4 powerhouse voices. Ursula Rucker, Kelli Sae, Maysa Leak and Karen Bernod. United in recognition to their connection with British Jazz/Soul chart toppers Incognito.
This is a benefit. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Susan G Koman.
Voices of Incognito is the initiative of Kelli Sae who has performed across the globe with legends such as Tina Turner, Paul Simon and Jermaine Jackson to name a few. After recently losing her mother to breast cancer, Sae felt compelled to use her talents in the fight against this deadly disease. “I witnessed my mom go through chemotherapy, a mastectomy and be diagnosed as cancer free only to have the cancer return with a vengeance and claim her life right before my eyes. I had to do something to help prevent others from this horrible experience,” Sae said. Sae founded SaeCureIt.org and then used her clout to unite some of the critically acclaimed soul musicians she has collaborated with in a music career that spans over 20 years.
Please come out and support a great cause- it’s also the first time in over 3 years that Kelli has performed in NY and also since Maysa too.
Other acts featured are Supa Nova Slom, Corey Glover, Letitia Guillory. DJ Ruben Toro, DJ Bobby D’Ambrosio and DJ Dres. Hosted by Lenny Green of WBLS’s ‘Kissing After Dark’ on Kiss FM.
Littlefield 7PM Cocktail Reception then performances. 622 DeGraw St. Tickets available at Littlefield and at TicketFly

hey all! welcome back to another “Just A Girl…”! thanks for hanging with me and supporting this attempt to fully grasp the technology of our world and how we use it, especially women, artists and entrepreneurs.
there’s alot of tech stuff out there and it can sometimes be hard to navigate it all. for example, someone asked me today if, as an artist, it was TRULY necessary to have a Twitter page. and I’ve been asked that same question by people that are not involved in music and are just building businesses. so, how do I answer that? well, I say yes it is. however I personally know artists that don’t have Twitter pages and considering there are over 6 billion people on the planet I would say the majority of people in general don’t have a Twitter page. so there are some factors to consider:
a. are you or your company known? or are you trying to become known?
b. who are you trying to reach? are you trying to reach customers or colleagues?
c. Twitter is a very useful tool for connecting and building with people, but it does take some effort. just setting up a page and waiting for the world to contact you is not really how it works.
and there ARE so many factors to consider and so many different approaches that it can be daunting but let’s face it, the interweb, technology, social media and networking, Kindle’s, Google, ipad, pods and macs are GOING to be around. the question is are there limits or is it all bueno?
I personally waiver between thinking technology is AWESOME! and thinking it shouldn’t be put anywhere near some people (see BP). so part of this journey is to help us all get a better understanding of our world that has become increasingly “connected” and how we’re using our powers for good or dun dun dun…(again, see BP).
so, I wanted to take some time this week and ask you all some questions and get your input and/or suggestions. do you have a fave site that you want me to explore further? how do you feel about Facebook’s privacy changes and changes and changes? are you a Kindle person? or a good old fashioned book person? are you addicted to Twitter, gotta stay up on everything? or here’s a really contentious question: are you PC or MAC? how about how much time we are all spending online? I wanna know! I want you to leave me a comment and let me know what’s your take on tech? and then next week we’ll be back with another “Just A Girl..in this digital world”! so til then, thanks for checking back, everyone have a blessed weekend (if you’re in US have safe and happy Memorial Day!) and let’s all look forward to the week ahead!
