<itunes:summary>About Fiona Bloom
International Marketer, World Citizen, Connector, Producer
A beautiful little girl with big blue eyes hailing from London, England dreams of becoming a concert pianist at the age of 5. After years of prodigous finger duets with the ivory keys she was accepted into the highly reputable Royal Academy of Music in London. From there her triple thirds, trills and thundering technique garnered two full prestigious scholarships; one at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and the other at the University of Maryland. She also received a distinguished Steinway Piano Award. While pursuing studies of classical music she was soon attracted to the sounds of two turntables and a microphone. Hip-hop music had bounced into the room and Fiona was all ears.</itunes:summary>

The Juice is back!!!! Its been a long time coming. Unfortunately for you, I’m heading to Thailand for a couple weeks so I’ll have to pack a lot of info into this post before I leave you for a bit.

Winter in Tel Aviv has been full of music releases. And when there are releases, there are parties…

First, if you are in Tel Aviv tonight, please check out Onili’s release party @Abraxas for her single with Yael Deckelbaum (from HaBanot Nechama), entitled “Bali Lo Bali’, which is the Hebrew version of the original English tune, “You Want It” released by Onili awhile back.

Here’s the video clip she just released. Again, if you look closely, I make a cameo in this one as well!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Do you remember my live blogging the Onili tour in France? Well get ready cause we are going to the US! Finally! Onili is conquering a few of America’s major cities. We will be traipsing through Miami, New York, Austin (SXSW), and of course my home spot, PHILADELPHIA!

Also, speaking of parties, if anyone was at the insanity that was the Soulico album release party last Thursday, WOOOOOWWWWWW! It was incredible! Those boys really know how to put on a show. The show included performances by many of Israel’s best musicians (a lot of whom were featured on the album) including Onili, Axum, Ortega, Saz, Karolina, Idan K, Rebel Sun, Haim Laroz, and Kutiman. Here’s a couple videos from the night:

A lot of good things are happening here. I have a bunch of up-and-coming musicians I can’t wait to tell you about after my return from Thailand. And many music veterans finishing things up in the studios.

Our very own Borgore has been working hard with Diplo and is working to release a couple tracks with the man himself. His new EP comes out shortly. Take a listen:

I always revered him as one of my fave Reggae artists- traditional roots but with a power dancehall flavor depending on the song. Hard-Core!

Well- fans need not wait anymore– …April 21st sees Sizzla back with “Ghetto Youth-ology”

Out on Greensleeves Records.

It’s also Sizzla’s first album solely produced by his band The Firehouse Crew.
This album delves deeper into cultural and spiritual ideals. The Firehouse Crew has also been Sizzla’s tour band for many years.

This 15 track LP brings the prolific singjay back to his essence – chanting truths & rights over Firehouse Crew’s solid live riddims. Ghetto Youth-ology exudes the utmost vivacity and fervor, so that every song is filled with empowerment.

Almost 15 years deep and with more than 40 albums under his belt, Sizzla Kalonji’s returns with possibly his best material to date.

After getting a call from music critic Joey Guerra at Houston Chronicle around 6PM yesterday asking me for details on Wayna’s arrest I was like- wait- sure they weren’t referring to Lil Wayne or someone else named Wayne. He said “nope they said Ethiopian singer ” so I started making calls and sure enough……..

March 26th, 2009

Response to Grammy Nominated DC-Based Artist Wayna’s
Recent Arrest at Houston Airport

This statement clarifies recent reports that police arrested Ethiopian-born /D.C-based artist Wayna at the Houston Airport on Wednesday, March 25th. Wayna had just completed a mini-tour of Texas including a stop at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, South by South West (SXSW), and was en route to Miami to perform and attend the Winter Music Conference on the morning of Wednesday, March 25th. As she attempted to go through security, she was questioned by airport security about the prop that she uses on stage to perform a song about police brutality called “Billy Club” off of her critically-acclaimed sophomore album Higher Ground. The item had been inadvertently packed in her carry on bag. Despite explaining to security that she was a performer and that she had traveled throughout the country without incident with the prop usually packed in checked luggage; and that she had no intention to use it as a weapon, she was nonetheless arrested and charged on a 3rd degree felony weapons charge. She was released early Thursday morning on $5,000 bail.

Wayna, a singer-songwriter who hailed from the DC urban soul underground scene and who regularly infuses socially conscious, political and empowering lyrics in her music, was recently nominated for a 2009 Grammy in Best Urban/Alternative category for a remake of Minnie Riperton’s Loving You. The University of Maryland alumnus has tackled other controversial topics such as domestic violence. Her song My Love, debuted at # 2 and #18 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles and Hot Singles Sales chart respectively. The video for the song received nearly a quarter million plays on YouTube and MySpace video combined and very timely given the elevated interest in domestic violence awareness. Wayna worked as a writer in the White House Office of Presidential Letters and Messages during Clinton’s tenure before launching her music career full time. She has performed on national stages around the globe and has received critical acclaim from Essence, Billboard.com, OkayPlayer.com and Stevie Wonder and other outlets .

Wayna wishes to thank her friends, fans, family and everyone who have supported her throughout her career. Spending over 12 hours in jail has been exhausting and challenging for her especially given the irony of the situation. She has never been arrested nor has any criminal history. She relays that the experience has given her new and personal perspective to some of themes and messages she relays and portrays in her music.
